PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS 2019 - 2020

Below are professional development (PD) opportunities for graduate students. GAs meeting PD requirements may use one of these opportunities or submit an alternative prior to the event for PD per-approval.

 

Graduate Research Academy: Writing Skills workshops
  • Sept. 10, 2019  4:30 – 5:30pm – The first in a series of Graduate Writing workshops. This session focuses on general principles for approaching graduate level writing and developing productive writing habits. 
  • Oct. 24, 2019 4:30 – 5:30pm – This workshop focuses on creating clarity at the sentence and paragraph level of your writing. Please bring a piece of writing with you for practice.
  • Nov. 12, 2019 4:30 – 5:30pm – This workshop will focus on techniques for successfully editing your own writing.  Please bring a piece of writing with you for practice.

  • Same workshop, conducted on two different dates: Thurs., Sept. 26 at 6 pm and Wed., Oct. 29 at 6 pm

School of Business Distinguished Speaker Series
  • The American Economy in the 21st Century: The Liberal Order and Economic Resiliency” by Dr. Peter Frank, Dean and Professor of Economics at the Porter B. Byrum School of Business, Wingate University. The event will take place in UC Annex on Wed., Sept. 18 at 3:45pm.
Counseling Department's Professional Development Academy
  • "The Counselor's Role in College Readiness." This event will take place in Health Sciences Building, room 107, on Mon., Sept. 23 at 5:30 pm.
  • "Counseling Children in Military Families." Time and location TBA
  • "Clinical Consideration for Counseling Trans Individuals in the Military." This event will take place in Health Sciences Building, room 107, on Tue., Nov. 19 at 4:00 pm.
Etiquette Dinner & Networking Event
  • Students who attend will gain experience networking with professionals, and enjoy a four-course meal while an etiquette expert assists students in navigating professional dining etiquette standards. Tickets are $12.00 and must be purchased no later than October 15th at 4 pm. Students in attendance are expected to be in professional attire. This event will take place in the UC Annex on Tue., Oct. 22nd, 5:45 - 7:45 pm.
Adulting 101: It Makes Cents: Budgeting and Other Financial Tips
  • Ms. Christine Bell, Director of the UNCP's MBA program, will present a workshop on budgeting and financial management.
  • This event will take place in Livermore Library on Wed., Oct. 3 at 4:00 pm. 
Big Data: What Is It And What Does It Mean To You?
  • Dr. Joe West, Assistant Professor of Public Administration and Political Science, will conduct a workshop online, via WebEx Teams, at 5:00 pm Monday, October 28th. Please use the following link to log in: https://uncp.webex.com/meet/joe.west.
School of Business Distinguished Speaker Series
  • Dr. Russ K McCullough (Ottawa University) will give a presentation, titled "North Carolina and the Rest of the World: Economic Freedom Matters," on Wednesday, November 13th, at 3:45-5:00 pm in UC Annex.
