BraveNation Powwow and Gathering

3/17/22: The powwow has been moved to the UNCP Jones Center (main gym) due to the possibility of inclement weather. 

3/11/22 Update: We are not accepting any additional vendors at this time. 

The fourth annual BraveNation Powwow and Gathering (BNPG) will be held Saturday, March 19, 2022, at the Jones Center (main gym) at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Grand entry is at 12 p.m. Doors open to the public at 10 a.m.

Everyone is invited to join the #BraveNation as we celebrate the rich history and culture of America’s Indigenous peoples. The powwow and gathering features competition dancing, vendors, and recruitment activities for American Indian high school students. This is an alcohol and drug-free event. Also, bag chairs and selling merchandise by non-approved vendors are not allowed.

Schedule of Events

  • 10 a.m.: Doors open to the public
  • 12 p.m.: Grand Entry
  • 5 p.m.: Contest Finals/Inter-tribal/Results/Closing Ceremonies

Admission

  • Adults: $5
  • Alumni: $3 (must check-in at Alumni Engagement table)
  • Elders (60+): $3
  • UNCP Students, Faculty, and Staff (with UNCP ID): Free
  • Non-UNCP college students (with college ID): $3
  • Ages 7-18: $3
  • Children (6 and under): Free
  • Dancer Registration: each dancer will pay the general admission fee of $5 and be allowed entry into one competition
  • Drum Registration: each member of the drum will pay the general admission fee of $5

  • Drum Contest: 1st: $500, 2nd: $350, and 3rd: $200
  • Adult (18+): 1st: $200, 2nd: $150, and 3rd: $100

Vendor Registration

Vendor registration is $50 (arts and crafts), $100 (food), and no cost (informational). Please complete and return the form, along with a check or money order to the American Indian Heritage Center. Application is due March 11, 2022. Vendor Registration Form is linked below.

Dancer Registration

Please complete the form below if you wish to compete in the BraveNation Powwow & Gathering Powwow, scheduled for March 19, 2022. Each dancer will pay the general admission fee of $5 and be allowed entry into one competition. Winners will be required to show tribal identification.

Powwow Shirts

A commemorative T-shirt is available for purchase. Adult sizes are $15 and toddler/youth sizes are $10. The shirt features the red-tailed hawk (UNC Pembroke’s mascot), Old Main, and traditional Southeastern American Indian motifs.

  • A Powwow Etiquette guide is available to download below. It discusses what is a powwow, the different styles of dances, and the role of a drum group and drummers.

  • Free parking is available in the parking lot directly in front of the Jones Center.
