This University was founded in 1887 as the first state-supported college for American Indians in the nation. It is a remarkable story of a people’s passion for education and their belief that education is the foundation for a better life. From the beginning, our story is one of building opportunities and transforming lives and communities. Today, UNCP has grown into a comprehensive regional university that serves all North Carolinians through its 41 undergraduate and 17 graduate degree programs. Yet, its core purpose remains the same: to transform lives through education. UNCP is a part of the 17-member University of North Carolina system, one of the nation’s finest public university systems. UNCP is a great place to receive a high quality education at a very affordable price—a very important consideration during these challenging financial times. When you come to UNCP, you will find an intimate teaching and learning environment that features small classes and outstanding faculty. Opportunities abound to engage in research, leadership, community service, the arts, organizations, athletics and much more. Over the years, we have won numerous awards and distinctions. Several stand out: U.S. News & World Report described the University as the “most diverse campus in the South.” Our students learn about different races and cultures, naturally, on a daily basis. In recent reports, the magazine has highly ranked UNCP for its small class sizes and efforts to internationalize its campus. Princeton Review named the University one of its “Best in the Southeast.” The University has been named to President Obama’s Community Service Honor Roll for all three years of the award’s existence. Additionally, the Carnegie Foundation awarded the school the prestigious Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement. These recognitions demonstrate our commitment to providing our students engaging and meaningful experiences to help them find their niche in the world in which they aspire to live. I invite you to view our Web site to get to know us better. However, the best way to appreciate our beautiful campus is to see it for yourself and meet some of the great people here. I encourage you to take the time to visit us. I have worked in higher education my entire professional life and experienced many other college campuses during that time. I can attest to the special character that marks this University. We are proud of our past, excited about the future and fully embrace our role in providing educational opportunities to students who wish to find their place in the world. Come experience UNCP’s pride and dedication to your success. We welcome you to join us. Sincerely, Kyle R. CarterChancellor | ||||
