Pamela Barkett is new HR Director

Pamela BarkettPamela L.A. Barkett has been hired as Director for the Office of Human Resources (HR).

Barkett has over 20 years experience in a variety of HR management settings, including higher education. Before joining UNCP, she was Director of Employment at UNC Chapel Hill.

Barkett will be responsible for overseeing all personnel activities for the University with a staff of six. Her duties include administering benefits, recruitment, training, employee recognition and compliance with state and federal mandates.

She reports to Neil Hawk, Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs.

“I think UNCP is very fortunate to hire a person with the higher education experience that Mrs. Barkett has accumulated during her career,” Hawk said. “I believe she will have a positive impact on the human resource services that we offer and will quickly introduce new ways to better serve our employees. I’m excited about the opportunity to work with Pam on improving all aspects of human resource services.”

Barkett said the HR field is driven by constantly changing state and federal regulations.

“There are many issues that need to be reviewed going forward because personnel policies are always changing,” she said. “I have a generalist background in human resources, and I enjoy all areas of the profession.”

There are several important goals for the future of her office, Barkett said.

“We will be part of the Banner implementation, a new software, which will help us manage personnel and benefits,” she said. “During the next year, we will be working on a new state compensation system, career banding.”

“We also look forward to the opportunity to offer new training and employee recognition programs, along with the continuing policy review,” she said. “Working with the Staff Council is also very high on my list.”

In her position at UNC-Chapel Hill, Barkett directed the workforce planning and recruitment effort.

A Baltimore native, Barkett has five children and stepchildren and two grandchildren. Her husband, Jake, has accepted a position teaching math and coaching basketball at South Robeson High School.

A Business Administration graduate of Towson University, Barkett earned a Master’s in Organizational Development/Human Resources from Johns Hopkins University.


Officer Ricardo Bell awarded ribbon for service

Chancellor Meadors and BellPolice Officer Ricardo Bell was awarded the University’s first-ever ribbon for meritorious service in the line of duty on October 20.

Chancellor Meadors bestowed the award along with a letter of commendation.

“On behalf of the University, I am very pleased to make this award,” Chancellor Meadors said. “Everybody involved with this case believes that you handled a difficult situations as well as possible.”

Officer Bell defused a conflict outside a residence hall that resulted in the arrest of a non-student. Bell said he was not alone out there.

“I appreciate the recognition,” Bell said. “It can be a thankless job at times, but I need to point out that I was not alone. I had back-up from the department, and I’m glad they were there for me.”

Officer Bell has been with Police and Public Safety Department since Aug. 1. He received law enforcement certification and training at Robeson Community College and worked nearly five years with the Robeson County Sheriff’s Department.

The Police and Public Safety Department recognizes officers by issuing award ribbons for exceptional achievements. This is the first award for meritorious service in the line of duty.


Staff Council election is Tuesday, November 4

Staff Council elections are slated for Tuesday, November 4 with the polling place at the University Center Information Booth. The poll will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A member of staff council will visit third shift building on Monday, November 3 to allow voting. The polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Election results will be announced on Friday, November 7.

Employee of the Year voting is November 4

Employee of the Year voting will be Tuesday, November 4, 2003 in the
U.C. Lobby. Hours are 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.

The nominees are: Helen Alston (Biology), Wanda Hammonds (Sociology), Darlene Cummings (Registrar) and Earl Cummings (Physical Education).

Also, you can register to win dinner for two that will be announced during the Christmas Social on Dec. 3, 2003 in the University Center.


Canned food drive underway on campus

The Student Government Association and the Lumbee Regional Development Association (LRDA) is organizing a community canned food drive from October 6 until December 2.

Distribution of the collected items will take place on December 5 to various needy families and individuals.

Please bring non-perishable food items to the University Center or LRDA. Items to be collected include: canned meats, canned vegetables canned fruits, tea, rice, macaroni, and all pastas, beans (dry), Twinkies (or any cake that is wrapped), diapers of all sizes, baby needs (wipes, Q-tips, etc.) and Ensure.

SGA Community Service Chair Siporia Wrighten stated, “The Community Service Committee of the Student Government Association is very pleased to announce their partnership with the Lumbee Regional Development Association. Together, we plan to collect cans and other non-perishable items to donate to the surrounding communities and families who are in need. This is a great honor for us, and we know that this will be a great success because we have the support of our peers and have a committee that believes in this project and what it will do for the community.”

The Spanish Conversation Group will be meeting in Room 251 at the U.C. until December 4. Mark in your calendars the following changes: On November 13 - no room available yet; On November 20 - Student lounge at the U.C.
