VIRUS WATCH

UNCP-owned computers are protected with Mcafee VirusScan.

Always use an anti-virus program such as Norton Antivirus, Mcafee VirusScan or other anti-virus programs.


Check your computer's protection

UNCP Residential students may download McAfee Anti-Virus from http://resnet.uncp.edu/downloads/mcafee/.

 

CURRENT MCAFEE VIRUS SCAN (for UNCP owned computers)

  1. To check to see that your information is the latest:
  2. Right-click the VShield icon on the lower right of your computer. It looks like a shield with a red V in it. A menu should appear.
  3. Left click on the words "About VirusScan Enterprise" to open the information window.
  4. The McAfee VirusScan should be titled Virus Scan Enterprise 8.0.0.
  5. The Scan Engine should be 5100.
  6. Your virus definition should have been created no more than a week ago.

If you still have a problem, select one of the virus protections and follow the steps.

  1. McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0
    If you have an older version, take the following steps:
    1. Right click on the V Shield on the task bar (where the time is).
    2. Select Update Now.
    3. After it processes close all McAfee windows.
    4. Right click on V Shield and select "About VirusScan Enterprise".
    5. You should have latest date.

    If you don't have any versions, contact the helpdesk, 521.6260 or helpdesk@uncp.edu, for assistance.

  2. Scan engine 5100
    Left click on the START button, left click on RUN, left click on BROWSE.
    1. Browse to P:/mcavirus/update-engine/5100eng.exe and double-click on it.
    2. Click OK in the RUN window.
    3. Accept defaults.
    4. After it is complete check in the Vshield icon as described above and the scan engine should have been updated to 5100

Hoaxes

If you receive any email messages indicating that you may have been infected with a virus and instructing you to make changes to your computer system, DO NOT DO SO!! These are usually scams. Check with UCIS anytime you think you may have received a virus.
