Unified Communications provides all-in-one solutions
The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has been chosen to participate in a project to implement Microsoft’s unified communications infrastructure in higher education. Through a partnership with Microsoft and the NWN Corporation, UNCP will receive implementation services valued at $40,000 to install Microsoft Office Communications and Exchange servers. The servers will be used to implement the unified messaging system and later other communications solutions.
Using the existing telephone and other network technologies, Unified Communications will bring many capabilities to work collaboratively and communicate efficiently. One of the components, the unified messaging integrates messages from a variety of different devices – e-mail, voicemail, fax, SMS, and even video -- into a single resource, such as the computer or mobile device. It enables you to have access to any message through one access point. Faculty and staff will be able to receive voicemail on their computers and listen to e-mail messages over the telephone. Other capabilities include Web conferencing and instant messaging. With a microphone and video camera, you will be able to collaborate with colleagues online from the desktop on a real-time basis.
“Unified Communications will transform our ability to communicate in a positive way,” said Kevin Pait, director of network and system administration. He explained that this technology would lead to powerful communications and collaboration opportunities for both administrative and teaching environments.
Unified Messaging will be available to a small pilot group on campus by June 1, 2008.
