Wireless capability continues to expand
Whether in Locklear Hall or Sampson Hall, you open your laptop and can immediately get “connected.” UCIS is currently working toward a complete-wireless campus.
One of the first steps to a wireless network is setting up and configuring access points. Through the access points “wireless” and “wired” networks are connected. Cabling to access points to transfer the data was completed during the first week of March. UCIS staff is now configuring the access points.
“It is important to understand signal behavior,” said Chris DeSmit, network specialist. “Signals alter depending on building structures. Signals in an older building are not predictable.”
The wireless network will provide stable connections. UCIS will be able to detect and fix a problem easily by monitoring the access points. Coverage area of access points overlaps. If one access point has a problem, another takes over by intensifying the signals.
All 15 academic buildings will have wireless connections May 2008. Dormitories network installation is scheduled to begin May 7.
