UNCP lectures on iTunes U may be available by summer
UNCP students could be viewing an entire lecture online in the fall semester. UCIS is nearly completing the iTunes U project with Apple. The technical coordination –including formulating an authentication system – has been finished. UCIS will be testing iTunes U lectures soon.
iTunes U is an innovative educational and communications device that allows us to create a versatile educational environment. UNCP students will be able to enjoy free access to a wide-range of course materials available to them. Not only does iTunes U bring online lectures, it brings a new way to market UNCP. Events and lectures can be open to the general public or made accessible to only the UNCP community.
“One of the challenges is that the process is time consuming,” said James Lewis, interactive video manager. UCIS staff physically encodes materials and sends them to Apple, where UNCP iTunes U is hosted. For example, it takes 50 minutes to encode 50-minute video file. When we launch iTunes U, Lewis continues, “It will open up a lot of possibilities for us.” Stay tune for iTunes U project updates.
