In order to be admitted to the Social Work Program, students must be:

  1. Successfully admitted to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. For more information click here
  2. Successfully complete ENG 105, English Grammar, and ENG 106, English Composition. These courses prepare students to write professionally. In particular, students are taught the APA citation style, which is required for all papers submitted to SWK courses.
  3. Successfully complete 50% of the liberal arts curriculum with a minimum 2.0 GPA. The generalist model requires social workers to be academically well rounded. The Liberal Arts is considered an extremely important foundation for competent social work intervention.
  4. Successfully complete an ENG exam. The test is primarily used as a diagnostic tool to assist students to enhance their professional writing skills.
  5. Submit an Social Work Admissions Form
  6. Submit two reference letters. The reference form letter can be found in this document by clicking here and can be printed.
  7. Successfully complete an interview the social work faculty..
    1. Apply critical thinking skills within the context of professional social work practice.
    2. Practice within the values and ethics of the social work profession and with an understanding of and respect for the positive value of diversity.
    3. Demonstrate the professional use of self.
    4. Understand the forms and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination and the strategies of change that advance social and economic justice.
    5. Understand the history of the social work profession and its current structures and issues.
    6. Apply the knowledge and skills of generalist social work to practice with systems of all sizes.
    7. Apply knowledge of bio-psycho-social variables that affect individual development and behavior, and use theoretical frameworks to understand the interactions among individuals and between individuals and social systems (i.e., families, groups, organizations, and communities).
    8. Analyze the impact of social policies on client systems, workers, and agencies.
    9. Evaluate research studies and apply findings to practice, and, under supervision, to evaluate their own practice interventions and those of other relevant systems.
    10. Use communication skills differentially with a variety of client populations, colleagues, and members of the community.
    11. Use supervision appropriate to generalist practice.
    12. Function within the structure of organizations and service delivery systems, and under supervision, seek necessary organizational change.
    13. Each of these expected outcomes is described in detail as part of the screening interview.
In order to be retained in the Program, students must comply with academic and professional
standards. Five academic standards include:
  1. Minimum Major and Overall GPA of 2.0
  2. Violation of the CASW Honor Code
  3. Violation of the UNC-P Student Honor Code
  4. Violation of the National Association of Social Workers' Code of Ethics
  5. Violation of course prerequisite requirements.
  6. Missing the number of classes listed below enables a student to be eligible to receive an F in a course
    1. Six (6) contact hours for a three (3) credit hour class
    2. Four (4) contact hours for a two (2) credit hour class
    3. Two (2) contact hours for a one (1) credit hour class
