Fairmont, NC

Jordan Williams is a third-year English major with a concentration in Literary Studies. We recently reached out to him to learn a little more about his experiences in the program here at UNCP and to get a glimpse into the life of an English major.

What made you decide to major in English?
I decided to major in English because it was my favorite subject in high school, and I have always seemed to have a knack for writing. As every proper English major should, I also love to read!

What’s your favorite thing about being an English Major?
My favorite thing about being an English major is getting to write about and discuss great works of literature every day. It’s truly a dream! I have always said the English faculty are the most helpful and passionate on the entire campus of UNCP. I also love the small classes and the fact that since we are a “small” major, I’ve been able to develop life-long friendships with fellow majors.

What do you wish people outside the major understood about the field?
Though I love the work I do, I wish people would understand that my work has value, and that it is work, not just fun. I also would like for people to gain an understanding that reading and writing makes us better communicators in all aspects of life.
What do like to read for fun?
For fun, I like to read political books and pieces. I just finished reading Hillary Clinton’s What Happened, and I also love murder mysteries like the Alphabet series by Sue Grafton.

Is there a book you hate to admit to NOT having read?
I will reluctantly admit to never having read Frankenstein. Every time I tell someone in our department that, I’m met with a gasp! I’m just about to start the book for my British Romantic Lit (ENG 3150) class, so it will [soon] be taken off the huge “to read” list.

How do you spend your free time (when you’re not reading, of course!)?
Free time? What is that? Outside of my coursework, I work as a consultant in the University Writing Center, and I’m also an assistant manager at my family’s convenience store. In my spare time, though, I enjoy shopping and working with the teenagers at my church.

Is there anything else about yourself you’d like to share?
I would encourage everyone to take English classes at UNCP beyond general education requirements. They truly are the best classes on campus. I also would like to thank the department for all the support it has given me these last three years.
