action research
Action research is designed by, conducted by, and implemented by classroom teachers to improve teaching and learning in their own classrooms. It involves the collection of information/data in order to better understand an aspect of teaching that is of interest or concern to the teacher. Action research tends to be (a) cyclic- similar steps tend to recur, in a similar sequence, (b) participative- in most cases, the students are participants in the process: (c) qualitative- it deals more with language than with numbers; and (d) reflective- critical reflection upon the process and the outcomes are important parts of each cycle.(Kemmis, S. and McTaggard, R., eds. (1988) The Action Research Planner.) More information on Action Research can be located at www.uncp.edu/home/baker/actionresearch.
