Be the Difference….Teach

Why should you consider becoming a teacher?
From the words of Mr. Rick DuFour, “If you appreciate a calling in which each year offers a fresh start, new beginnings, and the opportunity to impact lives in a positive way, then consider being a teacher.  If you believe it is important to help children and young men and women acquire the knowledge, skills, and dispositions essential to productive and satisfying lives, then consider being a teacher. “   An unknown author has said, “Teaching is the profession that teaches all the other professions.”

A few of the benefits of becoming a teacher in North Carolina include working in a beautiful state that is regularly acknowledged as being among the highest ranked places to live and work in the nation, opportunities for advancement, using and teaching technology in the classroom, using and/or developing a great sense of humor, enriching and empowering the lives of others, inspiring those you teach, a great schedule with summers off,  perfect family career, life-long learning, and more important than ever, job security.

Teaching is a demanding job that requires in-depth knowledge of subject content, pedagogy, and many varied skills such as patience, leadership, and creativity.  Different types of classroom teachers include K-12 teachers, Special Education, and English as a Second Language.  These areas include preschool and kindergarten, elementary grades, middle grades, secondary grades, career and technical, and other K-12 areas.

Why study education at UNC Pembroke?
At UNC Pembroke, we take education seriously.  Since 1928, UNC Pembroke has been a leader in developing and nurturing educators.  If you’ve already decided to be a teacher, you will become a better teacher at UNC Pembroke because you will be taught by professors who love to teach.  If you haven’t decided what you want to be, UNC Pembroke can still be a very good fit.  Passion for education is what we’re all about, and a degree in education can take you in direction beyond teaching.  Many UNC Pembroke graduates become professional educators, progressing to careers as school superintendents and other education administrators.

Financial aid for teaching careers is available through scholarships, grants, loans, and work study.  Some of these include, NC Teaching Fellows Program, Millennium Teacher Scholarship -Loan Program, (MTSL), Prospective Teacher Scholarship- Loan Program (PTSL), Future Teachers of NC Scholarship-Loan, and the Federal TEACH Grant Program.

With the current and projected need for educators in the state of North Carolina, a career in teaching holds promise for both today and tomorrow.  There are immediate needs for teachers in all subjects and at all teaching levels; high-need areas include math, science, middle grades and exceptional children.
