What is the PRAXIS I?

The PRAXIS (Professional Assessments for Beginning Teachers) is a testing program that many states use as part of their certification requirements. PRAXIS I -- Academic Skills Assessment, is composed of three tests: the PPST (Pre-Professional Skills Tests) in reading, PPST in writing and PPST in mathematics.

Do I have to take PRAXIS I?

Yes, you must pass the Praxis I tests (reading, writing and mathematics) in order to be admitted into UNCP's Teacher Education Program

EXCEPT if you have a four-year college degree (with a 2.5 GPA)

OR , if you have the following:

SAT score of 1100 or ACT combined score of 24 - you do NOT have to take any of the PRAXIS I tests.

SAT math score of 550 or ACT math score of 24- you do NOT have to take the PRAXIS math test.

SAT verbal score of 550 or ACT English test score of 24- you do NOT have to take the PRAXIS reading or writing tests.

Paper and Pencil tests—
Register online with a credit card ( www.ets.org ) or by mail

 

Computer tests—

Call for an appointment, 1-800-853-6773 (credit card required)

When are the tests given?

Paper and pencil tests are given six to seven times a year. Computer-based tests are given numerous times, just call for a date that meets your needs.

What tests do I need to take?

You need to take the Praxis I series, which consists of reading, writing, and mathematics. The codes for these tests are as follows:

Paper and pencil tests:
reading—0710 writing—0720 math—0730
 
Computer-based tests (C-PPST):
reading—05710 writing—05720 math—05730

 

What scores do I need to obtain to pass the tests?

In NC, passing scores for the paper and pencil tests and the computer-based tests are the same and are:

reading—176 writing—173 math—173 or a combined score of 522

You may retake any of the tests you do not pass without taking the others.

When do I need to take the PRAXIS I?

Typically, you take it sophomore year or ASAP for transfer students.

 

How much do the tests cost? See ets website for fee waiver information

Paper and pencil tests--$50 registration (per year) and $40 for each test

Computer tests -- 1 Test--$80, 2 Tests--$120, 3 Tests--$160 (Combined Test--$130)

 

What can I do to prepare?

  • Read the website carefully ( www.ets.org ).
  • Study PPST (PRAXIS I) Tests at a Glance on the website.
  • Use PLATO, a web-based tutorial, paid for by UNCP Teacher Education. See Dr. Thompson in the Education Center for access.
  • Use the practice booklets for each test area available in the Curriculum Lab (Education Center).
  • Go online to: www.learningexpresslibrary.com Register, go to Teaching, PPST and other appropriate areas.
  • Attend appropriate workshops at UNCP. Posters, the School of Education
