First Americans' Teacher Education

The 2006 First Americans’ Teacher Education (FATE) grant program has as its primary goal the production of new American Indian teachers for American Indian communities.  The program seeks to increase the number of highly qualified American Indian teachers who will teach in schools with significant American Indian student populations.  The program proposes to address the shortage of American Indian teachers at all grade levels through a comprehensive strategy that will include licensure preparation and induction support.   The program will also institutionalize a culturally relevant program in the School of Education

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
  • American Indian UNCP students
  • Declared Education majors
  • State or federally-recognized tribal members
  • Undergraduate degree seeking (sophomores, juniors and seniors), licensure-only or lateral entry students
  • Degree, licensure and employment as a teacher must be attained by August 2009
  • Student should have 2.5 GPA
  • Not financial-need based
  • Service payback obligation/required (service payback equivalent to length of time trained)
  • Service payback must be in an area related to the degree and licensure
  • Cash payback required in the absence of service payback (cash payback for cost of training)
