frequently asked questions

Here you will find answers to some of the questions commonly asked about by various groups of students.

Transfer Students
How will I know which transfer courses will be accepted by UNCP?
An analysis of college transcripts will determine what course requirements have already been met. The transcript analysis will first be conducted by the Office of Admissions to determine General Education course equivalents.  The program coordinator for the licensure program will then review transcripts to determine if any major course requirements have been met. It may be necessary to provide course descriptions and/or course syllabi for major courses before a decision is made regarding course equivalency.

Licensure-only/Lateral Entry
If I have already earned a bachelor’s degree, how do I get a license to teach in North Carolina?
The standard basis for licensure is the completion of an approved education program at a regionally accredited college or university.

What is a licensure-only student?
Licensure-only students hold at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.  Licensure-only students are required to complete a semester-long internship in addition to coursework defined by the program of study. The advantage of this program is you will complete all coursework before entering the classroom. Licensure-only students are not required to take Praxis II subject area exams required for North Carolina licensure with the exception of Elementary Education, Exceptional Children, and BK if you are teaching Kindergarten.

What is a lateral entry teacher?
Lateral Entry Teachers are individuals employed in a North Carolina school system that hold at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the subject area they are employed to teach.  Coursework is completed Lateral entry teachers are required to take Praxis II subject area exams required for North Carolina licensure.

I hold a current teaching license.  How do I add another licensure area?
Individuals who hold a clear teaching license in one area can add an additional teaching area to the license by completing an approved teacher education program in the additional area and meeting the federal requirement to be “highly qualified” in the additional teaching area or by satisfying Praxis II testing requirements for the additional area. Individuals adding administrative and/or student services areas must satisfy the Praxis II testing
requirements for these areas.

Will I be licensed to teach if I move to another state?
North Carolina Department of Instruction has reciprocity with 41 other states. You will be able to apply for a license in the new location and will meet most of the licensure requirements. There may be a need to take additional tests other than Praxis because the licensure tests vary from state to state.
