IMPORTANT MEDICAL ADVISORY

STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES (SHS) TO SPONSOR THE AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE

MEDICAL GUIDELINES

To be a donor, you must be 17 or older. You must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health and must not have donated in the past 8 weeks. Most medications won't cause you to be deferred as a donor. Other conditions will be evaluated by staff at the collection site.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

When appointments are made in advance, the process takes about one hour. First you sign in, have your temperature, weight, blood pressure and pulse checked. A health history review and hemoglobin (iron) test will also be taken. The actual donation takes about 10 minutes, followed by a 15 to 20 minute stay (for observation) for refreshments.

FACTS

Blood can only be stored for short periods of time. Whole blood and red cells can only be used for 35 to 42 days following donation, and platelets, another part of blood, can only be stored for five days. The Red Cross must collect blood every day to ensure that enough blood is available for patients who are ill or undergoing surgery.
