3. Minutes

There was a concern dealing with the minutes on the website. This will be checked on. The minutes from last week were read and were unanimously approved by the Senate.

4. Guest Speaker

a) Ms. Michelle Warters: Blood Drive
Suggestions were made dealing with the blood drive that they should be held on Wednesdays because of the Student Activity Period. Senators are to recruit donors. There is a need for blood because of the expiration date; the expiration date is 42 days. It also takes an hour to take blood and it’s less than a pint. The body replaces it in 24 hours. The blood drive will be February 12th on Wednesday from 9-2.

b) Victor Landry: FSU
Not present at the meeting.

5. Committee Reports

a) Student Issues: Beth Nichols needs any concerns for the business tonight

b) Food: Selena Craig was appointed to Food Committee Chair

c) Entertainment: Jan. 8- XXX- 89 People
There were 200 people at the Back to School dance on Thursday night. The prizes for Open Mike Night was a Playstation 2 and DVDs. There were 25 people who attended.

d) Constitution: Descriptions for the offices and the senate expansion needs to be approved. The grievance policy (which will be on the agenda at a later time this evening) needs to be viewed over. Our election campaign will be in February.

e) Interclub: no report

f) Critical Mass: The committee report from last week was intended to be used for this week’s committee report.
Policy should be finished by Paul by late this week or early next week. Brandon and others will shop for movies this Friday.
Recycling: Recycling programs at other schools was discussed. Most other schools started with can recycling since it is profitable, and then used that money to build their program. Other people/organizations already collect from the dorms so it doesn’t look like we can go that rout. Next week Rachel will bring the bins that she found on the internet. Next meeting we will invite NORML and the Biology Club b/c they are both big on recycling.
Senate Expansion: Paul is meeting with Jackie Clark to get the current student enrollment so that we can expand the senate properly.

g) Public Relations: Flyers need to be made for at-large positions. There also needs to be a draft of SGA Times. Also, Alphonza Thomas was able to get sponsorship for Homecoming from Ruby Tuesday’s at the amount of $20,000. That would be $5.00 off each meal who receives a coupon.

h) Treasurer: There have been a few budget changes but not too many. This will be submitted in the Pine Needle.

i) Community Service: There will be a Teen Court on January 23rd at Red Springs. The sign up sheet for the Palmer dance is going around. Dealing with Service NC, Dominique Cooper traveled to high schools and middle schools in Lumberton, yet there was no feedback. There is a good chance that we will be working with the Maynor Manor children. In addition, Palmer Prevention is going to have a karate tournament in February or March. SGA maybe able to help out.

j) President’s Report: Career Service is offering a contest for free pizza every month. In order to win, one must submit a new name for online newsletter. The pizza will be from Pizza Hut and it will be for a whole year. Contact lori.bumgarnar@uncp.edu. February 5th is the Student Forum, Red Lobster dinner will be next week, and the Campus Night Watch will be on January 27th at 6 p.m.

6. Old Business

There are two at-large senate positions available.

7. New Business

a) Club Approval: The club is the Gamma Phi Beta Honors Society. It consists of 91 members from last semester and the top 20% of each application. This organization was approved by the senate and will return next week for a second approval.

b) Committee Chairs: Selena Craig was appointed to food chair, Jennifer Langley was appointed to Interclub Chair, and Paul Parker was appointed to Vice Parliamentarian. All these chairs were approved by the senate.

c) Homecoming update: Homecoming week will be from February 17th-22nd. There will be an Asian setting, dorm competition, and T-shirts. The spirit committee is in charge of the dorm competition, banners, and the parade competition. There will also be a pep rally. The T-shirts were viewed in the meeting and there was a recommendation for all athletic teams to be on the T-shirts. Still waiting for the Golden Knights to see if they are going to jump near UNCP. Also looking at the radio station Foxy 99 to be out there.

d) Ad Policy: Dr. Schaefer asked for a policy of how and where to put up advertisements. Some rules that will be looked at:
· Sidewalk chalk should be only on the sidewalk
· No ads on glass doors
· No trash cans
· Time limit
· Flyers outside should be laminated or in plastic covers
· Punishments for violators
· Registration for personal ads
· Getting posters signed

e) Grievance Policy: Beth Nichols presented a policy that is being worked on and asked if Senate will stand behind the working policy. They were a combination of three policies from other schools: Charlotte, NC State, and Chapel Hill. This will give the Faculty Senate what we are working on with the Grievance Policy. It will discuss the important issues of what you can grieve about and with whom. It will be more of a chain-of-command. There will be a panel and it will consist of 3 faculty members, 3 staff members, and 4 student members.

f) Student Funding: There were a few changes such as the amount is $3,000, all organizations must open an on campus account, and prohibited expenditures dealing with sports consist of Varsity sports and intramural. This does not concern organizations such as the Soccer club because they do not receive any funding from the school. Air travels will be paid if they make it to the regional. Every applicant must meet with Jermaine Thomas for he will be the Financial Committee Chair. The Finance Committee will consist of 5 senators and each year the Vice President of the Senate will appoint them. The President and the Vice President will be allowed to attend the meetings but not allowed to vote. Another change that was made at the meeting was the requirement of attending the Interclub meeting. With the last change to be made, this was approved by the senate and will be approved by the students.

g) Constitution Committee: Descriptions for committees in the constitution. The committees will be the Interclub, Community Service, and Public Relations. This will also be put on the ballet for the elections.
