3. Guest Speaker:
Denesha Sanders from the career services center came and spoke about the career services’ expanded publicity so that students will know more about their services. They not have an online newsletter, new brochures, workshops, and are now open until 7:30 p.m. There is also a Career Fair next Wednesday from 10 – 12 (Walt Disney will be there). They are willing to come to classes or groups anytime to speak about career services. The Discover Test was discussed. Several senators suggested that the test be offered during a Freshman Seminar class like previous years, and Mrs. Sanders agreed.
4. Committee Reports
Student Issues: In the game room, complaints were made that old Christmas decorations were still up, and the old school name (PSU) was still on items in the game room. Also Bert’s has old athletic posters up. These complaints were being looked into as an inspection was done and changes will be made immediately. In the game room, they will be putting up new things on the walls, and updating information on the organizations (Fraternities and Sororities) in Bert’s. Plans for the UC Annex are making progress as the committee is looking at two contractors. At the end of the semester they hope that the one that is decided on to build the annex will begin work. One of the challenges that they have given the contractor is to find a way to make more the space more personal so students will use it. They will also be doing more advertising for homecoming this year to encourage more support among the alumni and students so be looking for that as well. Pending the approval of the GA, on campus housing apartments will be built on the old intramural field by a private developer. The apartments will be managed by the University and will house 335 students. The lease will be for 9 months, and financial aid can be applied to pay for the costs. The housing contract will be similar to the current on campus housing contracts. Plans are to make it for upperclassmen (Seniors, Juniors, then Sophomores), and if passed by the GA will alleviate the housing problem for Fall 2003.
Food Committee: No Report, however, some suggestions were made. It was suggested that Berts put ketchup in front of the counter instead of behind. It was also suggested that Taco Bell menu should change, but Selena said that it was already changed. Certain machines for certain foods are too expensive, so the menu was changed. Sanitation in the Café and Berts was also addressed. There have been numerous complaints. Selena said she would talk to Mike about this. Siporia addressed the courtesy in the café, and it was debated on whether courtesy was important. Some cafeteria ladies have worked here for a long time and are set in their ways, and firing them is not really an option. Complaints that the fruit was luke-warm were made. A diabetic student’s diet was given to Selena to give to Mike.
Entertainment: The Barber Shop was shown on Wednesday at 9pm in Moore Hall. There were about 27 people in attendance. The Barber Shop was shown on Saturday also in Moore Hall at 8pm where there were 15 people in attendance. CAB needs as much help as we can get setting up the dance set so please come out and help. Weekend Excursion will be here on Monday at 8pm in Moore Hall. We also will be playing Coming To America in Pine Hall at 8pm.
Constitution: Election went well and the turnout was 106 voters. Everything was passed. Some people disagreed with the job descriptions. Brad joined the constitution committee.
Interclub: The inter-club had its first meeting of the semester last Thursday. There were a total of 17 clubs and organizations present. I have also received a number of emails after the meeting asking for more information and to become a member of the inter-club. The meeting was a huge success. Yearbook wants interclub to help get the clubs together for pictures.
Critical Mass: No report.
Community Service: Underage drinking Campaign Dance went well. 20 volunteers came. Teen court will be February 27th. Campaign for compassion is starting in about a month. Each senator must sign up for two events. Service NC – There is a sex workshop planned for the younger kids and the older ones will help clean Strike at the Wind.
Public Relations: Interviews didn’t go very well last time. They want more substance. There are two more senators needed for next week. The guy from the Rope Corp. who we gave $200 to have our plaque ready, but he wants us to pay for it. The minutes will be checked to see if he agreed to pay for it or not.
Spirit Committee: Parade is going well. The only problem is finding a marching band. Dorm competition is not going too well, Belk and West are signed up, but the other dorms do not want to participate because of some issues last year.
President’s Report: Koji went to get James Earl Jones tickets for the senate, but they were already sold out. But he did get DL Hugley tickets. Homecoming will be good this year. Committee Chairs need to turn in year end reports. Candidates meeting for officers and senators are February 27th at 4:00 p.m. in room 251. The constitution committee is currently investigating the senator expansion issue.
5. Old Business
A. Club Approvals: Deeper Life Ministries and WNCP TV were approved for their second time.
B. Homecoming: Goodies and T-Shirts are in. Only 50 staff shirts are available. Teresa will decide who will get the staff shirts based on who works the most homecoming week. Sign-ups for the dance are needed, especially at later times.
6. New Business
A. Y.E.L.L.: Calvin Webster, head of Campaign for Compassion, presented the senate with a leadership workshop for high school students called Y.E.L.L. Since SGA senators are leaders on campus, he thinks that this is a good workshop for us to adopt for community service. He wanted us to do it on Service North Carolina day, but since we already have events planed, we decided to do it the following week.
B. Senior Gift: Senior senators will meet sometime to discuss a senior gift.
7. Announcements
A. AASO is having Apollo night tomorrow at 8:00 in Moore Hall.
B. Student Issue members need to think of a night walk day.
C. Jermaine Thomas is running for Homecoming King
D. Yearbook pictures are next week.
