letter to 2008 Spring graduates

Dear Prospective Graduate:

Congratulations on your impending graduation!  To make Commencement an impressive and unforgettable event, we are asking that you read carefully the following information.

The Spring Commencement will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 3, 2008 on the grounds of the soccer field next to Lumbee Hall. The speaker for the commencement ceremony is Mr. Scott Turbo.   All candidates for graduation are required to be present in the Auxiliary Gym, located in the Jones Health and Physical Education Center, at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, May 3rd.  PLEASE BE ON TIME AS ALL CANDIDATES MUST LINE UP ALPHABETICALLY (BY COLLEGE OR SCHOOL, THEN DEPARTMENT).  Instructions regarding the line up and ceremony will be given at that time.  The gates will open for guest at 9:00 a.m. on graduation day.  All guest should be seated no later than 9:45 a.m.

During the ceremony, marshals will lead the candidates to the stage where the names will be called, a degree cover given, and congratulations given by Chancellor Meadors. Candidates will stand while Chancellor Meadors confers the degrees.  Diplomas will be mailed after the Spring grades are processed.  Do not expect them before
June 16, 2008.

Honor cords for Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Cum Laude and honor sashes for Honors College graduates will be distributed to the candidates prior to the line-up in the Auxiliary Gym on May 3rd.  Those students receiving either of these honors will be contacted by mail before graduation.

All candidates for degrees are encouraged to participate in the ceremony, but if they choose may request permission to graduate in Absentia.  Enclosed is the absentia card that must be submitted along with a check for $3.50 for postage no later than April 4, 2008 to Ms. Darleen Lowry, Registrar’s Office, UNC Pembroke, Post Office Box 1510, Pembroke, NC 28372.

We have reserved tickets (eight [8] for each candidate) for the Spring Commencement.  Your cap and gown as well as tickets will be distributed at Grad Finale, March 12th  from 10am - 7pm and March 13th from 10am - 4pm in the University Center Annex.  If you fail to pick up your tickets on either of these dates, they will be available in the Registrar’s Office in Lumbee Hall (except for March 21st [Holiday] ).  The last date to pick up tickets is Friday, April 25, 2008.  If there are any extra tickets available after this date, they will be distributed on Friday, May 2nd from 8:00 a.m. until they last on a first-come first-serve basis (only two [2] per candidate) in the Registrar’s Office.

The Senior Brunch will be Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in the University Center Annex.

Candidates who did not attend the Grad Finale may pick up their caps and gowns at the UNCP Bookstore beginning Wednesday, April 9th through Friday, May 2nd.  The UNCP Bookstore will be open Monday through Thursday, 7:45 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., Fridays from 7:45 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. until 1.00 p.m.  Generic graduation announcements and graduation accessories will be available after Grad Finale.
