letter to 2009 Fall graduates

Dear Prospective Graduate:

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! To make your commencement ceremony an impressive and unforgettable event, you are asked to read very carefully all of the following information.

The Winter Commencement will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2009 in the main gym of the Jones Athletic Center on the UNCP campus. The speaker for the ceremony is Dr. Susan Cannata, UNCP’s winner of the 2009 UNC Board of Governors Award for Teaching Excellence.

Promptly at 8:30 a.m., candidates for the bachelor’s degree should report to the Auxiliary Gym, located in the Jones Athletic Center, to line up by college or school, then by department. Also at 8:30 a.m., candidates for the master’s degree should report to rooms 1165 and 1166 of the Jones Athletic Center to line up according to degree program. PLEASE BE ON TIME, AS ALL CANDIDATES MUST LINE UP ALPHABETICALLY.

The doors of the Jones Athletic Center will open for guests at 9:00 a.m. on graduation day. All guests should be seated no later than 9:45 a.m.

During the ceremony, University marshals will lead the candidates to the stage where the names will be called, a degree cover given, and congratulations offered by Chancellor Charles Jenkins. Candidates will be asked to stand while the Chancellor confers the degrees. Diplomas will be mailed in February 2010 after the fall semester grades are processed and diplomas have been printed.

Honor cords for Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Cum Laude, and honor sashes for Honors College graduates will be distributed to the bachelor’s degree candidates prior to the line-up in the Auxiliary Gym on December 12. Those undergraduate students receiving any of these honors will be contacted by mail before graduation.

All candidates for degrees are encouraged to participate in the commencement ceremony. However, if you choose, you may request permission to graduate in Absentia. Enclosed is the absentia card that must be submitted along with a check for $3.50 for postage no later than October 31, 2009 to Ms. Darleen Lowry, Registrar’s Office, UNC Pembroke, Post Office Box 1510, Pembroke, NC 28372.

Five (5) admission tickets for each candidate have been reserved for the Winter Commencement. Tickets, as well as caps and gowns (and hoods for master’s degree candidates), will be distributed at Grad Finale, October 21 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and October 22 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the University Center Annex. If you fail to pick up tickets on one of these dates, they will be available in the Registrar’s Office (except for November 26 and 27, which are holidays). Tickets must be picked up by Friday, December 4, 2009. If any extra tickets are available after this date, they will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis in the Registrar’s Office on Friday, December 11 starting at 8:00 a.m. (only two [2] extra tickets per candidate).

Candidates who do not attend the Grad Finale may pick up their caps and gowns at the UNCP Bookstore beginning Wednesday, November 4 through Friday, December 11. Caps and Gowns will not be available after graduation. The UNCP Bookstore will be open Monday through Thursday, 7:45 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday from 7:45 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 2.00 p.m. Generic graduation announcements and graduation accessories will be available after Grad Finale.

The Fall Graduate Brunch will be held Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in the University Center Annex. All students who expect to graduate in December 2009—candidates for both bachelor’s and master’s degrees—are invited to join the University community in celebrating your accomplishments.

If you have questions concerning any of the above information, please contact the appropriate office.

Sincerely,

Sharon Kissick
Registrar

Sara Simmons, Ph.D.
