Required Book for Fall 2012 Semester
PLS 1010-800 and 801 Introduction to American Government

Required Course Materials

Text: American Democracy
There is one textbook for this course: American Democracy, Selected materials from American Democracy Now, Second Edition by Harrison and Harris, published by McGraw-Hill.

In addition, you should keep up with current news events (especially stories on the 2012 national elections, Congress and the Obama administration) through newspapers, TV, magazines or the internet, as they will be brought up in the course of our discussions.  Current news events are a great way to bring concepts out of the textbook and into the “real world”.  I have made some mainstream news feeds (AP, FoxNews, etc.) available on the Connect homepage.
The textbook is available for purchase from the UNCP Bookstore.

This textbook is comprised of selected chapters from American Democracy Now, Second Edition by Harrison and Harris.  A picture of the cover of our version of the text is available under the "Textbook Information" tab on the left hand side of the Blackboard page.

  • The publisher's listing for the full version of the text, which has a different cover picture and additional chapters than our version, is located here:  click here to view

Each NEW textbook purchased from the UNCP Bookstore SHOULD be packaged with an access card/registration code for the companion website McGraw-Hill Connect.  The back of the access card/registration code package has instructions for registering for Connect materials.

If you purchased a used textbook without an access code, don't worry!  You can buy an access code for Connect - click here and then look for the gray box that says "How to Buy Access Online".

  • Some of you may wish to buy the text from a vendor other than the UNCP Bookstore.  I have no problem with that, however please note that at the end of the day, YOU are responsible for obtaining the correct textbook with Connect access.  Buying the wrong textbook is not a valid excuse for missing assignment deadlines.
  • An e-book version of the textbook is also available through the Connect website.

Connect Website:  Registration for Connect is required

Connect is a companion website created and maintained by McGraw-Hill, the publisher of our textbook.  A number of your assignments will come from the Connect website; therefore you must register for Connect in order to access them.

If you have problems registering for Connect, you can visit the Connect Success Academy for answers to frequently asked questions.  If you cannot find a solution to your registration problem, a link to Connect Customer Support is located at the bottom of the Connect Success Academy page.

I cannot fix any registration issues you might be having (i.e., your code does not work).  It is your responsibility to contact McGraw Hill Connect Customer Support, and be registered for Connect as soon as possible.
