| UNCP Football Coach Pete Shinnick Pleased With Progress & Recruiting “Matt is a great addition to the team,” exclaimed Shinnick. “He will bring a winning attitude and great work ethic to the team.”
Evans, a four-year letterman and all-state QB, directed the Seraphs to the state championship as a senior and was tabbed to the all-state and all-county teams. Evans, who is 6-0 and 195 pounds, also led St. Bonaventure to a #1 ranking in California and a #13 national ranking among high school teams. “This is a great opportunity to build a program and to be a part of something special and news,” Evans commented. “I really liked how similar Chancellor Meadors and Brother Paul are. Both know the students by name and are involved on campus each day.” Shinnick and his staff, which will grow by two assistants at summer’s end, are still recruiting for this season and have begun recruiting for 2007. They were also pleased with the success and turnout at the team’s on-campus tryout held in April which saw over 40 athletes compete and participate in running and agility drills. Recruiting is not the only thing that is moving along at a quick pace. The Braves fund raising campaign, “The First and Ten Campaign”, is gaining steam and has brought in more money to the university in the last year than ever before. For more information about joining the Braves inaugural team, please contact coach Shane Richardson, the Braves’ recruiting coordinator, at 910-775-4110.
