Lady Braves' upset attempt falls short By Nick Phillips
The UNCP tennis team put up a valiant effort on March 27, putting a scare into 10th-ranked Flagler, before the hosts grabbed a 6-3 Peach Belt Conference win. The Lady Braves dropped to 0-7 against nationally ranked teams this season after the loss. In doubles play, UNCP picked up a point in the No. 1 matchup, with senior Jenna McGary and sophomore Mia Winterbottom picking up an 8-6 win, and in the No. 3 contest, with senior Maricel Quintero and freshman Madeline DiNunzio grabbing an 8-1 win. Flagler's No. 2 team knocked off freshman Hannah Herlocker and senior Christian Minnick 8-1. In singles play, Flagler turned up the intensity, picking up a win on court three when Jennifer Savano bested Herlocker 6-1, 6-0 before No. 4 player Deon Miller and No. 5 player Rachel Gould defeated Quintero and DiNunzio by identical 6-1, 6-0 scores. Veronica Figueroa bested Winterbottom 6-3, 6- 3 in the No. 2 singles matchup before Gabby Scammacca pushed past Minnick 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 12- 10 in an exciting No. 6 matchup. McGary delivered the day's upset, knocking off Lauren Pfeiffer 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 1 singles matchup. Pfeiffer began the day as the 13th-ranked singles player in the region. |
