In the midst of an eight game losing streak, the Lady Braves softball team traveled to Charlotte to face Queens University on April 10. Game oneThe UNCP defense allowed big innings in the first, second and fifth to give Queens the 8-0 win in game one of the series.In the first frame, the Royals hung two runs on the scoreboard as Noemi Rodriguez delivered a two RBI double into center field. The following inning, the Lady Braves looked to respond as freshman Karlee Wilson and Senior Kirsten Hobbs reached base. Queens put an end to the Black and Gold threat as Kellie Van Dyke grounded out to third base. Two RBI base hits by Keeya Turner and Whitney Britt in the bottom of the second allowed the Royals to stretch the lead to four. In the top of fifth inning, the Black and Gold looked to post a run on the board as Van Dyke doubled down the left field line to get into scoring position. Van Dyke reached third in the next at bat before the Royals got the final out of the inning to stop the scoring opportunity. Queens was able to finish off the game in the bottom half of the fifth frame as they posted four runs on five hits. Hobbs led the Lady Braves at the plate with her 2-for-2 effort in the game. Wilson and Van Dyke recorded the other hits for UNCP. Game TwoBoth teams were locked in a pitchers dual for game two of the doubleheader as both teams manufactured all their three of their runs in the sixth inning.Junior Starr Gilley went six innings in the circle for the Lady Braves as she fanned four batters while allowing four hits and two runs, with one run being earned. The Royals pitching duo of Jessica Scott and Amanda Rodriguez struck out six while allowing nine hits and a lone run. Rodriguez picked up the win for Queens. In the top half of the sixth inning the Black and Gold plated the first run as Van Dyke delivered one of her two hits on the day in the form of an RBI single to score Karlee Wilson. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, freshman Lauren Medlin scored on an error to tie up the game at one. In the following at bat, Shelby O'Brien provided the game winning hit for the Royals as she recorded a single into right field. Freshman Whitney Britt led the Royals with a trio of hits. Van Dyke and freshman Morgan Davis each recorded two hits on the game. Five other Lady Braves tacked on a hit to help out in the effort. The Lady Braves have now lost five consecutive series. The Black and Gold have dropped their last 10 games, the team's worst streak since the 2003 campaign. | |||
