The Lady Braves softball squad traveled to Hickory, N.C., to take part in a doubleheader against the No. 25 Lenoir-Rhyne Bears on March 11. Game oneThe Lady Braves struggled offensively as they weren't able to put a single run on the board after a four hit performance, losing 7-0 in the first stanza.The UNCP offensive attack was led by freshman Brea Hartley, Junior Holly Berry and senior Kristen Hobbs, who collected two hits apiece. Hartley and Hobbs recorded a pair of RBIs each for the Lady Braves. Black and Gold junior Star Gilley received the decision after pitching three innings surrendering six hits and striking out three batters. Sophomore Natalie Klemann pitched three in- nings of relief work, and gathered six strike outs. A Montevallo free throw with 4:49 left in the half snapped a scoreless drought of nearly five minutes for Montevallo and marked the front end of a 13-3 run by the Falcons that closed the first stanza. Game twoThe Lady Braves snapped a six game losing streak, after an 11 hit performance in the second game of the doubleheader defeating Lenoir-Rhyne 7- 3. The Black and Gold used a five hit and five run performance in the third inning to gain control of the game.The UNCP offensive attack was led by freshman Brea Hartley, Junior Holly Berry and senior Kristen Hobbs, who collected two hits apiece. Hartley and Hobbs recorded a pair of RBIs each for the Lady Braves. Senior Ashley Harrell started the third inning with a walk, and was followed by a single from freshman Morgan Davis. Senior Jamie Burwell and Hartley recorded consecutive doubles, followed by back to back singles by Berry and Hobbs to give the Lady Braves a 5-0 advantage. Klemann started the game for the Lady Braves pitching three innings and tallying a trio of strikeouts. Gilley pitched four innings for the Braves, striking out seven batters on the way to her fifth win. | |||
