Entering its final series of the regular season, the Black and Gold softball team looked to start postseason play on a high note against Georgia Southwestern for a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on April 15, in Americus, Ga. Game oneIn game one of the series, the Lady Braves struggled to get the offense going. UNCP totaled five hits in the affair.The five hits came from five different Lady Braves as Brea Hartley, Holly Berry, Kristen Hobbs, Kellie Van Dyke and Karlee Wilson each added singles in the game. Jessica Martin picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Hurricanes as she went five innings while striking out three Black and Gold batters and only allowing four hits. UNCP's Starr Gilley pitched a complete game as she fanned six Georgia Southwestern batters and allowed four runs with two being earned. The Lady Hurricanes posted lone runs in the bottom of the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings en route to the 4-0 win. UNCP was able to get runners in scoring position in the top half of the fourth and fifth frames but were unable to score any runners. Game twoAn RBI double off the bat of Berry proved to be the game winning hit for the Lady Braves in the top of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie in the second game of the doubleheader to split the series.Both teams hung one run up on the scoreboard in the first inning as Berryscored Hartley in the top of the first off a single to center field and Mason Moreland scored for the Lady Hurricanes off an infield single by Gabby Buck. Buck's single was the only hit in the game for Georgia Southwestern. Jamie Burwell pitched the one-hitter for the Black and Gold. Burwell also struck out eight batters in seven innings of work. Hartley gave the Lady Braves a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning as Hartley scored Karlee Wilson with a sacrifice fly into right field. The home team responded in the bottom of the sixth as Buck hit a sacrifice fly into left field to score Moreland to tie the score at two. Kaytee Wilson led the way at the plate for UNCP with three hits. Berry added two hits as well. Hobbs, Hartley and Berry each recorded the only extra base hits of the game with each recording a double. | |||
