Women's Basketball dethrones Queens

A strong second half effort from the UNCP women's basketball team handed visiting Queens University its first loss of the season in a regional match up inside the English Jones Center on Nov. 19.

Four Lady Braves finished with double figure scoring to lead the offense in their 69-62 win.

Wayne Mack, Jazmine Kemp and Chandrica Fuller each had 13 points while Courtney Bolton chipped in 11.

With the score tied at 39-39 midway through the second half, Kemp was able to convert an and-one opportunity to give the Lady Braves a three point lead and help swing the momentum into the home team's favor.

Bolton also was able to connect on a layup and the foul to give UNCP its largest lead of the second half at nine with a little over seven minutes to go.

Queens battled back, however, and was able to tie the game up at 56 in a little less than four minutes.

For the final 3:04 of the game, the Lady Braves outscored the Royals 13-6 to cruise to the victory behind the scoring of Amelia Partin, Bolton and Fuller.

Much like the second half, the first half was very tightly contested as well.

The visiting Royals were able to take control of the game in the early goings and ran out to a 17-9 lead seven minutes into the game.

Behind the scoring of Kemp, Fuller, Mack, Taylor Gallentine and Keirra Haney, the Black and Gold was able to take a one point lead at 27-26 with a Gallentine layup.

Queens was able to hit a three right before the half to go into the locker rooms with a two point cushion.

Despite forcing 24 turnovers, Queens was unable to hold off the Black and Gold shooting as the home team shot 43 percent from the field to the Royals 29 percent.
,br> UNCP was also able to get their offense going off of their 45 rebounds and 15 turnovers by turning them into 12 fastbreak points.

The Queens' bench was able to double the Lady Braves' bench scoring output by a 36-18 count.

To go along with her 13 points, Kemp also led the Lady Braves with nine rebounds and three assists.


Kemp continues to succeed in her second year as she has recorded double digit scoring in all but one of the Lady Braves' games this season. Kemp currently leads the Black and Gold in scoring with a 13.6 points per game average.

Mack chipped in eight rebounds as well.The transfer has proved to be a key part of the Black and Gold offense off the bench in the sixth-man role with her scoring output increasing with every game this season.

Partin led the Black and Gold in the backcourt with a game-high five assists.
