New day, same results for Lady Braves By Nick Phillips
The UNCP tennis team found itself on the wrong end of the fun after their match to Peach Belt Conference foe Lander on Feb. 20, falling by another 8-1 margin. Lady Braves sophomore Mia Winterbottom survived a rally from the host's Aurelia Ruffat to earn a 6-2, 7-6 win in the No. 2 singles matchup, but the victory would prove to be UNCP's lone bright spot on the afternoon. UNCP produced two good matchups in double play, as the No. 1 team of senior Jenna McGary and freshman Hannah Hurlocker fell by a slim, 8-6 margin. The senior pair of Christian Minnick and Maricel Quintero fell in similar fashion with an 8-5 score in the No. 3 doubles matchup. Lander had no trouble disposing of UNCP's No. 2 pair of Winterbottom and freshman Madeline DiNunzio, easily defeating the tandem 8-0. In singles competition, McGary fell by a 6-4, 6-3 margin in the No. 1 matchup, while Minnick also provided some excitement in her No. 6 singles match befor falling 6-0, 4-6, 10-8. The Lady Braves' No. 3, 4 and 5 matchups each were similar in final margin, with No.2 Herlocker falling 6-2, 6-0, No. 4 Quintero slipping by a 6-0, 6-1 score and DiNunzio being defeated 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 5 position.
