The UNCP Braves started their home campaign with a treat for their fans, a victory over the Fayetteville State Broncos.
The Braves (6-3) defeated the Broncos 3-1 (30-13, 30-12, 29-31, 30-24) during their home opener.
Road Trip
Head coach Jeff Billington was anxious for the first game in Pembroke, especially after starting their first eight games of the season at the Wingate Volleyball Classic.
“I like to start the season on the road for the players to get their feet wet, so that when the home opener rolls around, there aren’t as many nerves for some of the younger players. After easily winning the first two games, Billington decided to play a lot of freshmen during the Broncos only winning game to gain some playing experience.
“We had the momentum, but I felt that we’d be better served to play some freshman.”
Clinching game
In the final game, the Broncos rallied from a 5 point deficit to make it 21-19, but UNCP’s starters were too much. Jessica Hartley’s spike ended the 4th and final game, 30-24.
Improvement
Despite the fairly easy triumph, Billington still has some issues with his team.
The Braves faltered with six service aces to 16 service errors.
“We had too many serving errors, but there is nothing major that practice won’t help. All this team needs it consistency and working harder on ball control.” Billington continued,“I feel pretty good about where the team is after nine games. |
