Golfers place at tournaments

The Black and Gold men’s golf team shot a combined 611 to finish in eighth place overall at the 2008 Armstrong Atlantic and Southbridge Pirate Invitational on Feb. 23 and 24 at the par-72, 6,922-yard Southbridge Golf Club in Savannah, Ga.
Andy Case (75, 74) and Matt Morrison (74, 75) shot 149 over the course of the two-day tournament to finish tied for 16th for the Braves. Nick Dial posted rounds of 81 and 71 to shoot a 152 to place 25th in the tournament. Andrew Wood shot a 105 on day one before having to withdraw.
Taylor Ferguson (78, 83) shot a 161 to finish 52nd.
Clayton State took home the team title posting a five over par 581 with Georgia College finishing second at 584. Coker finished third posting a 590 with Lander (591) and Newberry (594) rounding out the top fiveplaces.
CSU’s Will Wilcox won individual medalist honors with rounds of 68 and 69 to finish seven-under par for the tournament.
Iain Hall of Queens finished two strokes back of Wilcox with rounds of 68 and 71 to place second. Cooper Tinsley (71, 71) of Lander and Jonathan Visconti (68, 74) of Clayton State tied for third.
Rendleman Invitational
Junior Matthew Montford carded rounds of 71 and 72 to finish tied for ninth individually as UNCP finished tied for 12th as a team at the 2008 Richard Rendleman Invitational at the par-71, 6,665 yard Country Club of Salisbury, N.C., on March 3 and 4.
The Braves were led in the tournament by Matt Morrison shot a combined 150 (75, 75) to finish tied for 41st in the event.
Ferguson (153) tied for 56th recording rounds of 78 and 75 while Andy Case (156) finished tied for 70th with two rounds of 78.
Dial tied for 78th carding 80 twice over the two day tournament. Georgia College & State (288, 284, 572) won the team competition with four of their five golfers recording top-20 finishes. USC Aiken (284, 291, 575) finished three strokes back of the Bobcats and Catawba (290, 288, 578) finished third to round out the top three team finishes.
Carson-Newman’s Brad Robinson won the individual medalist honors after shooting a 71 and 68 for a combined score of 139.
Spring Invitational
The UNCP women’s golf team was in action on March 4, participating in the SAPC Spring Invitational that was held at Woodlake Resort and Golf Club.
The Black and Gold were led by Chritina Crovetti who finished tied for 10th place after posting a combined score of 166 (84, 82).
The Braves finished in ninth place as a team, posting rounds of 366 and 370 for a total of 736.
Melissa Whitt provided rounds of 99 and 89 to finish in 42nd place.
Kaitlin Payton (91, 100) finished tied for 46th place with a combined score of 191 and Emily Wentley (93,99) finished one stroke back at 192 to finish 49th.
Pfeiffer’s Brittany Beltran won the tournament shooting a five-over par 149 (73, 76). Newberry’s Franziska Blum (79, 75) and Saintt Leo’s Anna Riss (74, 80) tied for second with a 154. Pfeiffer won the team competition by shooting a combined 639 (327, 312) in the tournament.
The Lady Braves will be back in action on March 17-18 in the 2008 Chick-fil-A Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in Salisbury.
