Morales and Yow drive Braves to 10-2 record
By Robert Kelley
The UNCP Braves baseball season is off to a very solid 9-2 start.
The Braves received accolades before the season started with Kevin Dietrich and Jason Morales being named to the Preseason All Conference Team in the Peach Belt Conference.
The Braves are continuing to be recognized as pitcher Justin Yow was named PBC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 12.
The sophomore combined with Ryan Kirkman to throw a no-hitter versus the Coker Cobras on Feb 8.
With the 1-0 win, Yow improved his record to 2-0, while striking out 12 batters and only walking two in his eight innings of work.
Kirkman pitched a perfect ninth inning to notch the save.
Yow became the first Brave in 34 years to throw a no-hitter, with the last coming in 1973 thrown by Ron Norman.
This is also the first no-hitter for UNCP baseball since they joined the NCAA Division II ranks in 1992.
The no-hitter is the first within the Peach Belt Conference since 2005.
In just two starts, Yow has compiled a 1.38 ERA, a conference leading 21 strikeouts and an opponents batting average of .075.
Yow’s good week continued as he was named to the 2008 Swamp Fox Challenge all tournament team.
Not to be outdone by his teammate, Justin Yow, Jason Morales had a career day in the Braves 14-4 victory over St. Andrews at Sammy Cox Field on Feb. 6.
The senior went 3-5 at the plate, with all three hits being three-run homeruns to total nine RBIs.
His previous career high in homeruns was two, which he has accomplished twice.
The victory over St. Andrews was the fourth in a row for the Braves over the Knights.
Morales joined his Braves teammate Yow as being named to the 2008 Swamp Fox Challange all tournament team.
