Women’s basketball drops home game

The UNCP Women’s Basketball team lost its first home game of the season Nov. 25 to the North Carolina Central University Eagles 83-63.

The defense, particularly in the first half, was a major problem for the Braves.
“We didn’t guard them,” said UNCP Head Coach John Haskins.
UNCP was down by only two points at five minutes into the game but the Eagles began to separate themselves by going on an 11-0 run in the next 5:20 to begin taking control of the game.
The Braves improved their offense early in the second half by cutting down the 17-point halftime margin to 6 points with 13:40 to go in the game.
By the end of the half, though, the Eagles had regained a healthy 13-point lead before finishing the game on a 9-2 run in the last 5:40 of the game.
The Braves saw the Eagles put up a 60 percent field goal percentage for the game with a 67 percent rate allowed in the first half.
Coach Haskins also pointed to the Eagles capitalizing on the numerous defensive mistakes the Braves made as a key component of the loss.
Haskins said that the defense was not the problem early on in the season but seemed surprised it was a weakness against N.C. Central.
Haskins did see an improvement in the offense, which had put up scores of 61, 46 and 37 in the previous three games.
Leading the Braves offensively was sophomore forward Natalie Ray with 20 points and four rebounds while freshman L’oreal Price had 12 points.
The Eagles received outstanding play from guard LaVonna Hailey who had 15 assists and eight points.
Haskins said that the team was very young and played that way, with 101 total minutes coming from freshman and sophomore players.
He also said the team will improve the rest of the season.
