Volleyball wins one after two losses By Dan Kelly The UNCP Women’s Volleyball team has gone 1-1 in their two recent home games against Peach Belt Conference opponents to move to 6-11 on the year.
The match against Augusta State saw UNCP win their first home match of the season 30-32, 30-23, 27-30, 30-25, 16-14. The Braves were led by Abigail Parker with 19 kills and Lexie Wood with 34 assists. UNCP also had a .208 to .150 edge in hitting percentage in the match. The Panthers made some youthful mistakes during the match that allowed the Braves to secure the win, said Head Coach Jeff Billington. The Sept. 22 match against USC Aiken saw UNCP lose a very tight match 30-28, 25-30, 20-30, 30-26, 8-15. Billington saw his team play more to the potential he foresaw at the beginning of the season than in recent matches. “It just seemed like we were thinking way too much and just not reacting and doing the things we can physically,” Billington said. The decisive fifth game saw the Braves show their inexperience in capitalizing on a comeback from being down 1-2. “We didn’t come out strong enough…it was like we had a fight, an uphill battle,” Billington said. The Braves saw their hitting percentage decline dramatically from .407 in the opening game to a .162 average for the match. Despite the loss, Billington believed they played a better match than their win against Augusta State. |
