Women’s tennis swept by Jaguars

The UNCP women’s tennis team was beaten 0-9 on Feb. 27 by the Augusta State Jaguars to lose their second straight home game to a Peach Belt opponent.                     

Lack of effort            
           
“The effort just wasn’t there today,” said Robin Langley, head coach of the women’s tennis team.

The Braves’ No. 2 doubles team of Natalie Dies and Gabriela Vrana lost 4-8 against Norma Rovira and Fernanada Chiaparini after going up a service break early in the match.            
           
The Jaguars defeated the UNCP No. 3 doubles team 8-0.            

Singles

In singles play, UNCP struggled all-around with Gabriela Vrana playing the closest match against Laura Ferreria losing 3-6, 2-6.            

In the other matches, no other Braves player was able to win more than a single game in any given set.           

Stacey Wood lost her No.1 singles match 1-6, 2-6 to Nathalia Rodrigues while Natalie Dies lost her No. 2 singles match 2-6, 2-6 to Fernanada Chiaparini.            
           
Ivana Music’ lost her No. 3 singles match 0-6, 1-6 to the Jaguars’ Sarah Jegat.            

Mental Mistakes

Langley pointed to numerous mental mistakes by the Braves that led to their loss.            

“We’re beating ourselves. When we get pulled off the court, (when) we’re stretching for balls, that can’t be the time to go for winners,” Langley said.            

The Braves lost in a sweep for the second time this season.            
           
The losses to Augusta State and earlier in the week to Lander clearly left Langley puzzled.            

She said the Braves should be competitive with what she viewed as bottom-half teams in the PBC.
