Peter Shinnick Is UNCP's Head Football Coach
The University of North Carolina at Pembroke Director of Athletics Dan Kenney, with the approval of UNCP Chancellor Dr. Allen C. Meadors, announced Tuesday afternoon that Peter Shinnick (pictured) will be the Braves' head football coach.
"Today marks the end of one of the stages in bringing football back to UNC Pembroke and it also begins a new stage," Kenney stated. "We have ended our search for a new coach and begin the process of assembling a team and coaching staff. We are excited to announce Peter Shinnick as our Head Football Coach. Our search was truly national in scope and the Football Advisory Committee was flattered with the caliber of candidates that expressed interest in this position."
For the past seven seasons, Shinnick, UNCP's first football coach since the early 1950's, has held the reins as the head football coach at Azusa Pacific, a NAIA school in California, where he led the Cougars to a 53-22 record during his tenure, including a 34-10 mark over the past four seasons.
'A great choice.' "We feel Coach Shinnick is a great choice for UNCP," declared Meadors. "He brings a career of success to the table but most of all a reputation for being a coach of the highest integrity and one that cares for his student athletes. We are delighted to have Coach Shinnick, his wife Traci; daughters Anna and Rachel, and sons Elijah and Benjamin, join the UNCP family."
A 1988 graduate of Colorado, Shinnick, who has coached 22 All-Americans and 11 Academic All-Americans while at APU, has led the Cougars to five NAIA postseason appearances, including two final four showings in 1999 and most recently in 2004. 77 Azusa Pacific records have been established under Shinnick, while the Cougars have also appeared in 48 consecutive NAIA Top-25 polls over the last four seasons and 75 of 86 Top- during his seven-year stint.
"Peter Shinnick's competency and character impressed everyone that he came into contact with during the interview process," added Kenney. He demonstrated thru his previous coaching experiences that he truly committed to the UNCP Mission Statement of ÔPreparing Champions'. His coaching pedigree and background in football is outstanding. The success he had at Azusa Pacific as a Head Football Coach over the last seven years was unprecedented in their school history. We welcome him and his family to our campus, community and athletic family."
Lifetime preparation. Shinnick has a lifetime of training for this job as he grew up around the game. His father, Don Shinnick, was an All-American linebacker at UCLA, played 13 seasons in the NFL with the Baltimore Colts and then coached with the Oakland Raiders, Chicago Bears, St. Louis Cardinals and the New England Patriots. Three of Peter's 4 brothers played NCAA Division I football – Josh at UCLA, Adam at Penn State and Chris at Hawaii. Peter was an offensive lineman at Colorado. And while his family gave him a good football foundation, Shinnick built upon it by playing for Bill McCartney and then assisting some of the most respected college football coaches in the nation – Ken Hatfield at Arkansas and Clemson, Jerry Pettibone at Oregon State and Dal Shealy at Richmond.

Shinnick began coaching in 1988 as an offensive line coach at the University of Richmond, working with Shealy (father of former Azusa Pacific head coach Vic Shealy). He then joined Hatfield's staff as a graduate assistant at Arkansas and followed him to Clemson when Hatfield took over the Tiger program where he coached in two bowl games, the 1990 Hall of Fame Bowl and the 1991 Citrus Bowl.
Pettibone called on Shinnick in 1992 to coordinate Oregon State's recruiting efforts. Two years later he put together Oregon State's first-ever nationally ranked recruiting class, which was third in the Pac-10 and 19th in the nation (that class, OSU's 1998 seniors, featured 8 all-stars, the most in Beaver football history). Shinnick moved on to become the offensive line coach at NCAA Division II power Northern Michigan. In 1995, he began a 3-year stint as the offensive coordinator at St. Cloud (Minn.) State University. While there, he coached 3 first-team All-Americans. In 1998, he returned to his west coast roots to be near his family, joining Whitmire's staff at Humboldt State, where he served as the Lumberjacks' offensive line coach for a season.
High praise. Shinnick's coaching colleagues call him "reliable, consistent, appropriate, capable, imaginative, loyal, and full of uncompromising integrity." He has attracted players from all over the west coast, and has engineered a near 30% increase in the number of players on the Cougar roster. For the fifth season at least 100 players dress on game day.
Shinnick believes that football is not only fun for the players but should be entertaining for the fans as well, and the fact that four of his Cougar teams averaged 30 points a game validates his coaching philosophy. He likes to put the ball in the air, and yet balance has been the key to the Cougars averaging over nearly 400 yards of total offense through 65 games of the Shinnick era.
Administratively, Shinnick serves on various American Football Coaches Association and NAIA committees, including the AFCA Rules and Ethics committees and NAIA rating committees. He is a long-time member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a 18-year member of the AFCA.
Bowl play. As a player, Shinnick lettered 2 years as an offensive guard at the University of Colorado, playing in 21 games for the Buffaloes, including the 1985 Freedom Bowl and 1986 Bluebonnet Bowl (CU's first bowl appearances since the 1977 Orange Bowl). He graduated in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in business and later earned a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Clemson.
Shinnick earned 2 varsity letters as an offensive tackle at Hickman High School in Columbia, Mo., when his father was the head coach at Central Methodist College.
Peter and his wife of 14 years, Traci, a South Carolina native, have 2 daughters, Anna (10) and Rachel (8), and 2 sons, Elijah (5) and Benjamin (3).
