UNCP student athletes began volunteering at Pembroke Elementary School in mid-November as a community service project.
Each team has six to eight athletes travel to Pembroke Elementary on a designated day. They split up and go to different classrooms and read to classes ranging from pre-k to 5th grade.
The athletes will also talk to the children about what school is like at UNCP, their respective sports and where the athletes are from.
“We hope as student athletes to reach out to the kids of Pembroke, hopefully to inspire them to succeed in not only their sports but school as well,” Student Athletic Advisory Committee President Lindsay Bartholf said.
The athletes will also try to get the Pembroke children to come to the games. |
