Goals set for 2005-06 Pembroke sports teams

Coaches from each of UNCP’s fall sports teams expressed their optimism regarding the upcoming seasons at Media Day held on Aug. 23.

Chancellor Allen C. Meadors summarized the thoughts of each and every UNCP fall sports coach when he said, “Our goal is to finish every year in the top three of the conference.”

Men’s soccer

Coach Mike Schaeffer hopes to continue last year’s winning ways, which have resulted in Pembroke being ranked fourth in the nation for men’s soccer.

While the team has lost nine starters from last year’s squad, Coach Schaeffer feels that the new additions made to the team over the off-season can help the team continue its winning ways.

“There is no reason we can’t stay in the top 25 in the country,” said coach Schaeffer.

Women’s soccer

Coach Lars Andersson also has high hopes for his team. In the past, he felt that the teams were missing one of multiple key ingredients: speed, strength, skill, knowledge or heart. However, he believes that this year’s team possesses all the essentials required to reach the next level.

Volleyball

Coach Jeff Billington is confident that this year’s program will be successful.

“I like to win,” Coach Billington said. “I like to be in first place.”

Coach Billington also hopes to start a summer camp for local volleyball players. The goal of the camp would be twofold - it would help local players improve their skills and also give UNCP a look at potential recruits for the program.

Cross country

According to men’s and women’s cross country head coach Larry Rodgers, the departure of North Florida and Kennesaw from the Peach Belt Conference opens the door for the rest of the teams in the Peach Belt.

Rodgers hopes to be able to win the conference championship on Oct. 22, which will be hosted by UNCP.

UNCP’s new Sports Information Director Kevin Rhodes welcomed coaches and members of the press to Media Day.

Rhodes earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management from Clemson University and a master’s degree in education from The Citadel.
