Clarke, Andersson grab Peach Belt honors

By Rikki Cockrell
UNC Pembroke Sports Information Director

Augusta, GA - The Peach Belt Conference released the 19-member women's
soccer all-conference team on Friday afternoon with UNCP grabbing two
of the top awards. Pembroke's Jamie Clarke was named 2003 Freshman of
the Year, while head coach Lars Andersson was honored as Coach of the
Year.

It is rare for a true freshman to become an immediate impact player,
but Jamie Clarke did just that for the rejuvenated UNC Pembroke Lady
Braves in 2003. Playing in the defensive midfield, Clarke scored
eight goals with three assists this season. The freshman from
Jacksonville, NC, becomes the second Freshman of the Year honoree in
the three-year history of the program, joining current teammate Simonae
Taylor
, who received the award in 2001.

But the bulk of UNC Pembroke's success lies with head coach Lars
Andersson who picks up his first PBC Coach of the Year award.
Andersson started the program in 2001 and led the Lady Braves to a 13-5
record in 2003, just one year after finishing 4-11-4. UNCP went on a
nine-game winning streak towards the end of the season, including seven
shutout wins, before their season came to an end in the first round of
the PBC Tournament with a 2-1 loss to Francis Marion.

Hillary Helms, UNCP's freshman goalkeeper, was also named an All-PBC
performer. Helms started every game this season, turning in an
impressive 1.15 goals against average and a UNCP record eight shutouts.

Kennesaw State's Jenae Gzehoviak was named the conference Player of the
Year. Jenae Gzehoviak led the Peach Belt Conference in total points and
points per game in 2003 for the conference champion Owls. The
sophomore from Marietta, Ga., had 13 goals and 17 assists for 43 points
during the regular season and became the first player in conference
history to be named the PBC Player of the Week three times in one
season.

Below is the 2003 All-Conference team. Coaches voted for 18 players,
but 19 are on the team due to a tie. For the first time, the team was
selected position-by-position. Coaches were not allowed to vote for
their own players.
