A running start: Track teams compete against
Division I teams

UNCP’s
men’s and women’s track teams have started the season
with their best foot forward. The teams had an opening track meet
held at UNC Chapel Hill in late Jan. and competed against many other
numerous Division I opponents.
With both the
Braves teams ranked in Division II; it is quite an accomplishment
competing against notable high-ranking squads. The Braves are bringing
“quality athletes to the board” this season according
to Larry Rodgers, head coach for the two squads.
The almost equal
split of newcomers as well as returnees makes for a season of hard
work and a drive for success, Rodgers believes.
To obtain their
goals, both teams workout side by side to train for their specialized
event. With the team doing the same workout, each member can adopt
one another’s techniques to build their own skills, since
Rodgers feels aspects of the team lacks depth.
The Braves are
building towards improvement and rank through, “hard work,”
said Rodgers.
The teams are
also showing their ability to strive for more by hosting three meets
on their home track during this spring season, just as Chapel Hill’s
Division I team does.
As the team
raises the bar of what they are capable of, Rodgers looks forward
to a good season and enjoys watching the team develop.
“I enjoy
being around the students, helping with different challenges they
face and experiencing new things everyday.” Rodgers said.
