New bleachers will be built for UNCP’s soccer and track teams, according to Athletic Director Dan Kenney. The bleachers will be used by both the men and women’s track and soccer teams.

Kenney said the bleachers will be purchased with donations from generous contributors. One of the generous contributors was part of the Irwin Belk complex, which is a portion of the Belk department store family.

Facilities planning and construction will began constructing the bleachers in the middle of spring, according to Steve Martin, the university architect.

Martin said that the project, which includes specific designs and construction, usually takes 8 to 12 months to construct. The construction team will cut about four months off of that time and try to have the project completed in four to eight months. The bleachers should be completed between the end of summer and early fall.

The new bleachers are phase one of the renovation process. The next phase will be the building of locker rooms and restrooms near the bleachers.
