• Broken computers can also be recycled


Paper, Plastic and Metal: the big bold words printed on all the large blue recycling containers distributed across campus inform students what and what not, to place inside the container. Waste items should only consist of paper, plastic or metal.

The man in charge of the recycling program at UNCP, Director of Facility Operations Larry Freeman, received a phone call from Wagram Paper Stock informing him of a problem with the recycling program.

• Outage traps 4 in campus elevators


People all over campus were cast into darkness Nov. 4 after the electrical utility power went out at approximately 9:30 a.m.

According to Progress Energy, the outage happened when a utility contractor working for Progress Energy accidentally struck a power line that serves the majority of the campus. This caused the power outage from where he was working within one mile of the UNCP campus.

The sauna in the Jones Athletic Complex

The sauna in the Jones Athletic Complex was closed Oct. 9 and the weekends following it after it was vandalized three times during the fall semester. The sauna was reopened on the weekends on Oct. 24 after student complaints.

The sauna in the Jones Athletic Complex was ordered to close Oct. 9 and each weekend afterwards after three instances of vandalism during the fall semester. It reopened Oct. 24.

According to Facility Manager Tony Chavis, drinks, urine and feces were left on the hot rocks that heat the sauna.

• Campbell Wellness Center receives new equipment


The Mac and Sylvia Campbell Wellness Center, otherwise known as the fitness center, received new workout equipment for the fall 2009 semester. Three new ellipticals were installed on Oct. 21 and four wide screen televisions are to be installed in the near future.

“We want to make sure we have top of the line equipment for the students,” said Chair of the Physical Education Department Dr. Tommy Thompson. “If we put a piece of junk in there, it wouldn't last five minutes.”

• Teaching and Learning with Technology conference revived with help from UNCP


Although UNC disbanded its Teaching and Learning with Technology Collaborative last year, the annual conference will return for 2010, according to Dr. Anthony Curtis, UNCP Faculty Senate chair and Mass Communication professor, who will lead the statewide event for the University of North Carolina System.

"Last year, when the budget problems came up, the TLTC Board decided to host the conference completely online, eliminating the need for travel," Dr. Curtis explained. "We will do the same in 2010."

Hip-Hop artist Chuck D speaks to UNCP students about the importance of education. An estimated 300 to 400 students attended the event.

• Chuck D challenges students to take control of life


Carlton Douglas Ridenhour, most famously known as Chuck D, spoke at GPAC as part of the Distinguished Speaker Series. He was the second speaker at UNCP for the 2009/2010 academic year. Chuck D was on campus on Sept. 29 and took part in an interview in Old Main, a dinner in the UC Annex and presentation in the GPAC.

• Search forums planned

The Chancellor Search Committee will be holding six public forums between Oct. 13 and Oct. 20.

The committee is seeking input from faculty, staff, students, almuni and the community to aid them in the search for the new chancellor.

• E-mails sent to junk folder by error

Students saw many changes in Bravemail this year, such as 20GB of storage space, group working, calendars and mobile phone compatibility. But, they also found some incoming campus mail being placed into the “junk” folder.

Big time entertainment companies are monitoring not only the students on UNCP but anybody and everybody who has access to the Internet. Warner Brothers, the Recording Industry Association of America Inc., and Universal Studios are just the tip of the iceberg.

Before each home football game, tailgaters gather to celebrate UNCP and cheer on its football team.

But before any tailgating festivities, every person is asked to follow the tailgating policy. The tailgating policy remained the same from last year with one minor tweak – clarity on the vehicle towing clause.

When seven-time Emmy award winner Bill Nye walked onto the GPAC stage on Sept. 8 at 7:45 p.m., he was welcomed by a sold-out crowd that applauded for more than a minute and gave him the first of what would be two standing ovations.  Nye was appearing as the kick-off speaker for the 2009-2010 Distinguished Speaker Series.
