Student number is down again

This year's spring enrollment had a drop of 6.2 percent from fall 2011, Provost Ken Kitts told the Faculty Senate Feb. 1.

Academic standing policy becomes tougher this fall

Students are now re- quired to maintain a 2.0 GPA, or a C average, in order to stay in good aca- demic standing at UNCP, a new policy that went into effect beginning with the Fall 2011 semester.

Student health insurance plan rates to go up for the 2011-2012 school year

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has made changes to the health insurance plan for students returning for the 2011-2012 year, including the elimination of student co-pay for office visits, X-rays and laboratory tests.

The new Nursing- Health Professions building, a three story, 87,000 square foot facility, is scheduled to open in January of 2012. The $29 million facility is the largest project in UNCP history.

According to campus police on Jan. 14 an officer arrested an occupant of a vehicle who was driving while drinking and with a suspended license. The arrest happened in Courtyard Apartments.

According to the campus crime report, on Nov. 14 a student reported that their bicycle was stolen outside of Oak Hall. It was latched to the bike rack outside the building. An officer responded to the call and filed a report.

Students recently received an e-mail from a "Wake Forest" source asking them to fill out a drinking survey in exchange for a $15 gift card. Some students decided to fill out the survey with no problem, but some students questioned if it was legitimate.

Student reports being shot with BB/pellet gun in residence hall

According to the University Crime Report, on Oct. 27, a Pine Hall supervisor reported that a student had been shot with either a BB or Pellet gun. The student was shot while outside the building from someone on the third or fourth floor.

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has begun its search for a new provost.

After Provost Dr. Charles F. Harrington resigned as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs on March 29, Chancellor Charles R. Jenkins appointed Associate Vice Chancellor Dr. William H. Gash as Interim Provost.

Budget cuts lead to tuition hike

Many students were devastated to see the tuition increase on their bill for this semester.

"It's already difficult just paying for college, as is. I can understand the need for the increase, but it's tough on student's wallets, and I hope it doesn't go up much higher," said commuter student Patty Harrison.

• Multiple vehicle break-ins occurring

According to the daily crime report on April 17, multiple vehicles in Lot 13 located behind Oak Hall had been broken into. The first incident was reported at 5:58 p.m. Reports were filed by campus police; however, there has been a complaint made that the owners of the vehicles were not informed.

Pembroke Fire Department, Police Department and Emergency Medical Service responded to a wreck in front of Givens Performing Arts Center. The accident occurred around 2 p.m., on Feb. 12, and many students gathered to watch. Traffic was not stopped on the road because the car only blocked one lane.

• Tip leads to arrest at Village Apartments

On Feb. 3, 2010, Lieutenant Derrick Locklear and a fellow officer from campus police received an anonymous call at 12:15 p.m. regarding the illegal use of marijuana in the Village Apartments.

She means business, and she knows the ins and outs of how to operate one, too. Four years ago, then adjunct professor Ericka A. Jones started out on a mission teaching classes part-time at UNCP. Her zeal for academia has led to her new position as the Executivein- Residence for the School of Business at the University.

• Chancellor calls cuts to budget 'painful'

The need for a University budget reduction plan of 5 percent was the focus of a public forum Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. in GPAC. More than 200 people attended the event, mostly faculty and staff.

"Our current challenge is that we're required to develop a 5 percent reduction plan by Feb. 22," Chancellor Charles R. Jenkins said. "We're operating this year with $5 million less than what we have been."

• Police seek vandals

According to an email sent by campus police, two male students vandalized a pool table on Feb. 1. The incident occurred in "The Hawks Nest" game room located in the University Center. The students were seen on surveillance tape playing pool with several friends.

• Students come together for Haiti relief

The devastation in Haiti is not as far away as some people may think. The earthquake that devastated the country has hit close to home with some of the students at UNCP, who are now working on ways to provide relief for Haiti.

Carine Francois is one of those students. Francois has relatives in Haiti and currently has lost 21 members of her family. She is currently working on a clothing drive, along with the Office of Multicultural and Minority Affairs and other organizations on campus, called Hearts for Haiti that is accepting clothing and food donations through Feb. 15. Boxes are placed throughout the campus.
