The Regional Center changes its name

The university's Regional Center for Economic, Community and Professional Development has changed its name to simply The Regional Center.
Opened in 2000, the Regional Center is located off main campus at the Carolina Commerce and Technology Center (COMtech) on Livermore Drive, Pembroke.
The Center's mission is collaboration that enhances business development and empowers communities to improve the quality of life in southeastern North Carolina.
It addresses the diverse needs of the region through initiatives to increase resources, establish networks, and provide training, according to Teresa Oxendine, director.
The Center reaches out to residents, businesses, governments and nonprofit organizations throughout the region.
Its services are offered in cooperation with organizations to provide management development programs, health care initiatives, customized training, consulting, planning and technical assistance, conference designing and implementation, and economic and social research.
The Sustainable Agriculture Program is developing markets and training farmers who would join the farm-to-table movement.
The Regional Center assists small business in several ways. For instance, the Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) consults with new and developing businesses to find funding.
The Center is involved in health care with its federally funded Healthy Start Program, which works to improve neonatal and infant health.
The Center also operates several youth enrichment programs.
It also works with North Carolina's Southeast, a state-funded economic development clearing house.
