Dr. Mabe adresses students during Last Lecture

Graduate education professor, Dr. Larry Mabe, delivered the "Last Lecture" in GPAC April 11 at 3 p.m.

Dr. Mabe's discussion was targeted to current and future educators and was categorized by "50-cent sayings."

Dr. Mabe said teachers should be involved with students, and teachers should let the students know what they expect of them.

"As educators, the evaluation of our work is important. Students need to know the teachers' expectations' in order to achieve," Dr. Mabe added.

He said teachers can't fool students, and students want teachers to care about them.

He also said that if a teacher does not care, the principals should get involved and help them improve and, if that didn't work, get them out.

"My belief is that we should always do our best as educators," he said.

"When you make a mistake, accept responsibility for it," Dr. Mabe said. "The worst mistake to ever make is to make a fool of yourself."

Dr. Mabe has been an educator for 43 years and served as superintendent of Chatham County Schools for 11 of those years.

He joined the UNCP faculty in 2007. Dr. Mabe has taught at UNC–Chapel Hill, East Carolina University and Appalachian State University.

Dr. Mabe is the member-manager and founding partner of an education consulting firm, Educational Leadership for Success, LLC.
