Student number is down again

This year's spring enrollment had a drop of 6.2 percent from fall 2011, Provost Ken Kitts told the Faculty Senate Feb. 1.

The spring 2012 count was 5,862.

The fall 2011 count was 6,251.

Dr. Kitts said this drop was less than what the administration had anticipated.

Due to fall commencement, the spring enrollment is usually lower than the fall, Dr. Kitts said.

He added the average university loses around 5 percent of its student population during the transition between fall and spring semesters.

UNCP had approximately a 700 drop in FTE in the fall of 2011.

Dr. Kitts said it's too early to know much about fall 2012 because even though incoming freshman applications are trending ahead of fall 2011, the 700 FTE drop last fall was mainly returning students.

Dr. Kitts said he plans to implement a system to help students, who come up just short of funding tuition, to be able stay in school next fall.
