Humphrey beats back impeachment attempt

SGA President Dwight Humphrey remains in office after a failed attempt on Oct. 24 to impeach him.

The vote for impeachment fell short by 22 percent. A total of 18 votes were needed for impeachment. Of the 24 senators present at the meeting, 14 voted in the affirmative, nine abstained and one voted against impeachment.

Six senators brought forth on Oct. 1 a signed, formal petition for impeachment.

The petition for impeachment cited the student government constitution’s duties of the president, saying Humphrey did not “lead by example,” conduct himself “in a professional manner” and “establish effective communication within the SGA office.”

Three SGA committee chairs voted on Oct. 17 to bring the charges to the senate.

During the Oct. 24 meeting, SGA Treasurer Katina Bowie, senators Jamie Thomas and Shanna Porter presented examples.

“I do not see how any of these events hindered my job qualifications or abilities,” Humphrey told the Senate. The charges dismissed at the Oct. 24 meeting cannot be brought up against him again.
