Experienced student leaders have entered the race to run the Student Government for the 2009-2010 school year.
Although applicants for the offices of president, vice president and treasurer will be accepted until March 14, the SGA has already received applications.
Jacobs/Williams
Former President Marvin “Tubby” Jacobs, who rejoined the SGA on Feb. 20, will be running for president with former senator and Pine Hall resident adviser Danny Williams as his Vice President.
Burch/Simpson
Current President Barry Burch will be running for re-election along with Student Senate President Hannah Simpson, who also is the current vice president of the student body. Simpson is also the Around the Town Editor of The Pine Needle.
Treasurers
Current student issues chair Timothy Sampson and criminal justice major Michael Bousquet will be competing for the office of Treasurer.
Debate and elections
The SGA will be holding a debate among election candidates at 7 p.m. in the University Center lounge on March 19. Students will be allowed to ask questions to the candidates through the moderator. The election itself will be held March 25-26.
New director
The university is also looking for a replacement for Robert Cooper, who resigned from his position as Director of Student Life and SGA adviser on Feb. 29.
“We will be looking for someone with good organization, high energy and someone who really relates to students,” said Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Diane Jones.
Once candidates for the Director position are determined, a five member committee will be formed for a question and answer session in regards to possible candidates, Dr. Jones said. The committee will include the SGA president and members of other focus groups on campus.
According to Dr. Jones, until the position is filled, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Development Dr. Tom Corti will advise the SGA.
Associate Director of Student Life Symphony Oxendine will be overseeing the election.
