On April 18-19 at the Lumbee Guarantee Bank Field and Belk Athletic Complex, students can fight back against cancer by participating in a “celebration of life” at the Relay for Life.
Last year, UNCP raised more than $15,000 for cancer research and advocacy. The regional management was so happy with the event that this year UNCP will stand alone as its separate university Relay For Life.
More information about the relay can be found during the “Purple Rally” held on Feb. 20. The campus will be decorated, and there will be information booths about the event set up in the UC. Free Registration will also be held.
According to the event’s website, there are currently 30 teams. Leading with 90 members are the Bravehearts, followed by UNCP Housing and Residence life with 60 members and the Junior Nursing Class with 29. Teams will take turns walking throughout the day and night, to signify that “cancer never sleeps.”
The relay will open with the cancer survivor’s celebratory walk.
After dark, the luminaria service will be held to honor cancer survivors and to remember those who have lost the battle against cancer. The luminaria candles line the track and are left burning throughout the night as the teams continue to walk, eat and play games for a good cause.
