Bravecam will return to web

The Chancellor and his executive staff, consisting of the vice chancellors, have not, yet, made a final decision when the new bravecam installed on the front of Belk Hall will be reactivated for viewing on the UNCP website.

A meeting with the networking and web staff is being scheduled. According to Robert Orr, associate vice chancellor for Information Resources and chief information officer, this meeting should happen within a matter of days.

Once this happens, it should not take long before the camera is back online.

“It should be a quick turn around,” Orr said.

The camera, which is located on the front of Belk Hall, was taken offline in November 2006 after it was found to have been moved to look and zoom into female bedrooms of North Hall.

To solve this problem, a stabilized camera was installed by the vendor. Now, the angle and the zoom cannot be changed.

“University Computing and Information Services has assured me the same situation cannot and will not happen again,” said Diane Jones, vice chancellor for student affairs.

The camera was installed as an added bonus for prospective students by the Office for Enrollment Management, as it allowed people to see the traffic around campus.

It also showcased campus attractions, such as the water feature and the clock tower.

According to Jackie Clark, vice chancellor of Enrollment Management, recruitment has been unaffected by the camera being offline.

The main thing is that those students on campus don’t feel as if their safety or privacy is in jeopardy, she said. We are more protective of students on campus than those not here, she added.
