Tuition and fees to rise next fall

Tuition and fees for next year are being increased up to $184.
Some $30 is in a bond initiative that all of the system institutions are presenting, which has yet to be approved by the UNC Board of Governors. If it were not to be approved, the increase would be $154.
Whatever the amount, the increase will begin with the Fall 2007 semester.
UNCP proposals
Chancellor Allen C. Meadors limited the UNCP increase to a total of 6.5 percent. Some other schools in the system reportedly used a 6.5 percent limit, but then tacked the $30 bond initiative fee on top of that.
Local proposals were placed before the UNCP Student Fee Committee as well as Academic Affairs. In turn, they recommended the $184 increase to Chancellor Meadors.
“I make my recommendations to the UNCP Board of Trustees (on Dec. 1),” Chancellor Meadors said. “Then, the UNC Board of Governors will have the final say.”
The increases will be used for such needs as student activities, student support services, faculty salary increases and student financial aid.
“As we grow, students are demanding more activities and support services,” Meadors said. “This is how we provide those activities and services to the students, that they so rightly deserve.”
Marvin Jacobs, president of the Student Government Association, said, “If it helps us build student morale and keep faculty here, I’m all for it.”
