2006-07 editors announced

The Student Publications Board interviewed applicants at its April 12 meeting and agreed unanimously on the students to be editors for the Aurochs, the Indianhead and The Pine Needle beginning Fall of 2006 through Spring 2007.

David Townsend, a senior Secondary English Education major with a minor in creative writing, will be Editor for the Aurochs, the campus literary magazine. Townsend was a member of the staff in 2005-2006.

He has worked as a tutor in the University Writing Center and with the Scotland County Literacy Council. He is from Laurinburg, N.C. Townsend told the Board he has a passion for poetry, fiction and art.

Current Aurochs co-editor Mark Schulman said, "I have total confidence that David will perform to his utmost ability and continue the quality production of the Aurochs."

Jether James, a senior political science major, will be Editor of the Indianhead, the campus yearbook. James worked as a section editor on the Indianhead this year.

She had experience with her high school yearbook as well. She is from the American Virgin Islands.

"Jether really did a fantastic job as Student Life Editor," said Indianhead faculty advisor Sara Oswald. "We're happy she will bring that same dedication, commitment and creativity to the position of Editor next year."

She will be joined by current Editor Scott Ammons, who will return in the new position of Executive Editor. Ammons, from Laurinburg, N.C., will be a graduate student in the M.P.A. program.

Franch worked on the paper as a reporter and photographer before moving up from assistant photo editor to senior photo editor to news editor. She told the Board she is passionate about journalism.

Editor Franch and Executive Editor Ammons said they will work closely together to continue to improve the on and off campus news coverage, photography, website innovations and use of color.

"I'm excited that Carol will have this opportunity in her senior year to build a strong staff with a commitment to professional news coverage," said Dr. Judy Curtis, faculty advisor to The Pine Needle. "With Scott's return, his vision for The Pine Needle will continue its growth the paper enjoyed over this past year."

Applications for Editor positions are solicited in March and interviews are scheduled by the Board in April. The Student Publications Board is a subcommittee of the faculty senate.

It's composed of the faculty advisors to the publications, the current student editors of the publications, the associate vice chancellor for student affairs, a faculty senate representative and a SGA representative. Student publications are funded by student fees.
