Sister, brother break sports recordsBy Maleka Lipscomb
The brother and sister team of Ransom Walters III and Alesia Walters won three first place awards on March 18 at the Braves Track and Field Classic and took home two first place awards on April 8 at the Livingstone classic.
At the Braves Track and Field Classic, Alesia Walters, a junior here at UNC Pembroke took first place in the shot put (12.79m), javelin (32.16m) and discus (39.34m).
Walters broke the record for discus at the Livingstone Classic with a throw of (41.55m).
She also won first place in the shot put (12.82m).
Walters has been participating in field events for 11 years, and has grown to love the shot put.
"I feel blessed to have accomplished such achievements," Walters said.
Walters enjoys all four throwing events, but the shot put is her favorite.
“I focus more on the shot put because I know I have a good chance to place in the top three," Walters said.
Ransom Walters won the discus (33.46m), javelin (52.27m) and hammer (28.80m) at the Braves Track and Field Classic.
At the Livingstone Classic he took home first place in the javelin (46.97m) and the discus (37.58m).
Since the age of 15 Walters has been throwing the discus and javelin.
"Out of all the field events the javelin is my favorite, it‘s not a power throw like the others, it is primarily about technique, but I enjoy the technical aspects of all the throwing events," Walters said.
Both Ransom and Aleisa go by the motto: "Without struggle there is no progress."
The Carolina Championship is the next track meet. It will be held at the Belk Complex s Taylor Track at UNC Pembroke on April 15.
